ChatGPT can now read your iCloud Mail and Calendar on every plan, and Pro users can text their agent

In one week OpenAI connected iCloud Mail and Calendar to ChatGPT for all plans (Oct 27), let US Pro users text their always-on 'dot' agent over iMessage or RCS (Oct 28), and started letting you stay signed in to two accounts on the phone app (Oct 30). Here's what each one does and who gets it.

What happened

Three updates landed in ChatGPT this week, all listed in OpenAI’s official release notes (OpenAI Help Center).

1. iCloud Mail and Calendar (October 27, all plans). “iCloud users can now connect Mail and Calendar to ChatGPT to find emails, catch up on your inbox, check your schedule, and update calendar events.” It’s available on all ChatGPT plans, including Free, on the web, the desktop app and iOS (OpenAI Help Center).

According to Entrelligence’s walkthrough of OpenAI’s setup docs, Mail and Calendar are separate connections (linking one doesn’t link the other), both include read-only contact lookup, and each uses an Apple app-specific password that you enter in the connection form, not in the chat. Contacts and Reminders aren’t part of this launch (Entrelligence).

2. Text your dot (October 28, US Pro, beta). Dots are ChatGPT’s always-on agents that keep working between conversations. You can now reach yours “through iMessage or RCS”, and your dot “will also text you proactively with updates that may be relevant for you.” Texting shares the same memory and plugins as your dot in the app. OpenAI says your dot can only text you, only you can text it, and it doesn’t get access to your other text conversations. It’s rolling out in beta to Pro users in the U.S.; to start, open your dot’s profile in ChatGPT and select Texting (OpenAI Help Center).

One detail worth knowing: OpenAI says it uses Linq, a third-party messaging provider, to send and receive these texts, and that it did “extensive penetration testing” with Linq (OpenAI Help Center). Tech Times points out that this means the texts pass through a commercial middleman rather than staying inside Apple’s end-to-end-encrypted iMessage, and that it isn’t available in Business or Enterprise workspaces (Tech Times).

3. Two accounts on your phone (October 30). Account switching is rolling out to the iOS and Android apps. You can stay signed in to up to 2 ChatGPT accounts and switch without signing out; each keeps its own chats, memory, settings and subscription. Go to Settings > Switch account (OpenAI Help Center).

Our take

The iCloud news is the one most people will feel. Plenty of small-business owners, freelancers and families run their lives out of an iPhone with an @icloud.com address, and they can now plug that inbox and calendar straight into ChatGPT. Now “what did the accountant say about the VAT deadline?” or “move my Thursday 3pm and find a free hour next week” works for them too, even on the free plan.

For founders, sales and ops people: try it on the boring stuff first: “summarize every email from this client this month”, “what’s on my calendar before the board meeting”, “draft a reply to the supplier who asked for new pricing”. Keep ChatGPT’s app permission setting on “ask before making changes” until you trust it with your calendar. If your company runs on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, nothing new here; see our best AI agent for email and calendar guide for how the options compare.

Texting your agent is the bigger idea, for fewer people. An agent that texts you first (“the invoice you were waiting for just came in”) is how these tools stop being a website you have to remember to open. But it’s US-only, Pro-only ($100 a month and up) and in beta. And because a third party carries the messages, we’d keep passwords, bank details and anything sensitive out of those texts and handle them in the app instead.

Two accounts on your phone is small but overdue for anyone with a personal plan and a work plan. It also keeps work chats and memory out of your personal account, which is good hygiene.

For everyday users: if you use iCloud Mail, this is the week to connect it and see if ChatGPT earns a spot in your morning routine. If you’re deciding whether to pay, the iCloud feature works on Free; see Is ChatGPT Plus worth it? and our free personal-agent buyer’s guide. These are OpenAI’s claims; we haven’t tested the iCloud connection yet.
