Is ChatGPT Plus worth it?

What $20 a month buys you now that agent mode is gone, how it compares with Free, Go and Pro, and when to skip it.

The longer answer. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month5. What you're mainly paying for now is ChatGPT Work, the agent that replaced agent mode7: it researches and hands back documents, spreadsheets, decks, reports and Sites, and can start a task when a new Gmail message arrives4. Plus is also ad-free3. If you use ChatGPT a few times a week for questions, Free is enough. If you use it daily for work, Plus pays for itself if it saves you at least one hour a month that's worth more than $20 to you.

Is it worth it for you?

  • Worth it: you use it daily for writing, research or analysis, or you want Work to produce finished files and run on a schedule4.
  • Not worth it: you ask a few questions a week. Free has unlimited text chats within fair use1.
  • Consider instead: Claude Pro at $17 a month billed yearly8, or Google AI Plus at $4.999. See Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini.
  • Business use: ChatGPT Business is $20 a user a month on annual billing and doesn't train on your data10. On Plus, switch off "Improve the model for everyone" if you don't want training11.
