Short answer. Most founders should start with a $20 assistant (ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro) and connect only email and calendar. Move to an always-on agent (Grok Bot, ChatGPT dots) once you have repeatable web tasks worth handing off. Pick the business tier the day a co-founder or employee joins.
What founders actually hand off
Founders don't need an agent that "does everything". They need one that takes the same five jobs off their plate every week:
- Inbox and calendar: triage, first drafts, scheduling across time zones. See which agents can really do this.
- Research: market sizing, competitor scans, prepping for an investor or customer call.
- Sales follow-up: account research and personalised drafts you approve before they go out.
- Documents: board updates, decks, a one-page model.
- Web back-office errands: filling in portals, pulling reports, chasing invoices in tools that have no integration.
The first four are covered by any good chat assistant with connectors. The fifth is where "agents" that run their own computer earn their price.
The quick picks
| If you are… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo founder who wants one assistant for everything | ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro | $20/mo each12. Claude Pro is $17/mo on annual billing2. |
| Team on Google Workspace, inbox and calendar are the pain | Claude Team | Gmail and Calendar connectors draft, send (with approval by default), schedule and RSVP3. $20/seat annual, $25 monthly4. |
| Team on Microsoft 365 | Microsoft 365 Copilot | Built into Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel5. $21/user/mo add-on on top of a Microsoft 365 business plan6. |
| You want work done while you sleep, inside any web app | Grok Bot or ChatGPT dots | Grok Bot runs on its own cloud computer, 24/7, and can learn a workflow by watching you once7. Dots are always-on agents with their own cloud computer1. |
| You want finished decks, research and sites | Manus or ChatGPT Work | Manus does research, slides and website deployment8; ChatGPT Work creates documents, spreadsheets, presentations and Sites1. |
| Technical founder, wants full control | OpenClaw or Hermes Agent | Free, MIT-licensed, runs on your own machine910. You own setup and security (see Is OpenClaw safe?). |
There is no single winner. The best agent is usually the one that lives where your company data already lives: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or a pile of web apps.
Chat assistants vs always-on agents
Chat assistants with connectors (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot) work while you're in the conversation. You ask, they read your mail or calendar, draft, and wait for you. Claude's Gmail connector asks before sending by default3; ChatGPT creates the draft and you choose to send it1. That approval step is the main reason they're low-risk.
Always-on agents keep working when you close the laptop. Grok Bot gives each bot its own cloud computer, runs bots in parallel around the clock, and lists founder-shaped jobs such as sales outbound, expense manager and chief of staff7. ChatGPT dots are always-on agents that "keep making progress between conversations" on their own cloud computer, bringing results back for review1. Manus adds scheduled automations8. These are more powerful and need more care: they act on logged-in accounts without you watching.
Self-hosted agents (OpenClaw, Hermes Agent) are free and run on your hardware910. OpenClaw advertises inbox, email, calendar and flight check-in from WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack or iMessage9. The trade-off is that you are the IT department.
What it costs a founder
| Plan | Price | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | $20/mo1 | Personal plan; no admin console or SSO11 |
| Claude Pro | $20/mo, or $17/mo annual2 | Training is on unless you switch it off2 |
| Grok Bot (X Premium) | $30/mo12 | Usage comes from a weekly pool shared with Grok and Cursor13 |
| ChatGPT Pro (includes a dot) | $100 or $200/mo1 | Dots rolling out gradually; Pro access excludes the EEA, Switzerland and the UK at launch1 |
| Manus Pro | $20 or $40/mo8 | Credit-based; heavy tasks use up the allowance8 |
| Lindy | From $29.99/mo14 | Pauses when credits run out until reset or top-up14 |
| OpenClaw / Hermes Agent | $0 software910 | Plus the AI model you plug in and your time |
Once you have a team, business seats run about $20–25 per person per month for ChatGPT Business or Claude Team154. Both need at least two seats154. The full table is in How much does an AI agent cost? and on our pricing page.
What to connect first (and what never to)
- Calendar, read access. Lowest risk, instant value for scheduling and meeting prep.
- Inbox, read and draft. Keep "send" behind your approval. OpenAI itself warns that an agent signed in to email and websites is exposed to prompt injection, meaning instructions hidden in content it reads16.
- Docs and drive for one project folder, not the whole company.
- Never hand over banking, payroll or admin logins.
If you'll put company or customer data in it, use a business plan. ChatGPT Business doesn't train on workspace data15. Claude Team and Enterprise don't train by default2, and Anthropic lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 for its commercial products17. On personal Claude plans, training is opt-out2. Grok Bot offers a training opt-out and an Auto Review step for sensitive actions7; its SOC 2 status is unknown.
Choose in ten minutes
- Where does your company email live? Google: Claude or Gemini. Microsoft: Copilot. Neither: ChatGPT or Claude.
- Do you need it to act while you're away? If not, a $20 plan is enough.
- Is there a web task you repeat every week? That's your test for Grok Bot or a dot.
- Is it in your country? Gemini Agent is US and English only18; Muse is limited to the US and Canada at launch per coverage19.

FAQ
Questions people ask
What is the best personal AI agent for a founder?
For most founders, a $20/month assistant (ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro) connected to email and calendar is the right start12. Upgrade to an always-on agent such as Grok Bot ($30/month with X Premium12) or ChatGPT dots once you have repeatable web tasks to hand off.
Can an AI agent manage my inbox safely?
Yes, if sending stays behind your approval. Claude's Gmail connector asks before sending by default3, and ChatGPT drafts and lets you choose to send1. Start with read and draft access only.
Do these agents train on my data?
Business plans generally don't: ChatGPT Business doesn't train on workspace data15 and Claude Team doesn't by default2. On Claude's personal plans, training is on unless you switch it off2.
