Claude vs Gemini (2026)

Which one to pick for your business or your everyday life: what each costs, what it can actually do as an agent, and what happens to your data. Plain English, every fact linked to Anthropic's and Google's own pages.

The longer answer. If your business already pays for Google Workspace, start with the Gemini you already have: it's in every Business plan from $7 a user12. If you're on Microsoft 365 or Slack, or you want an assistant that takes on whole tasks and runs them on a schedule, Claude Team at $20–25 a seat is the better pick459. For personal use they cost the same, $20 vs $19.99 a month57: Gemini throws in 5 TB of storage; Claude gives you hand-off tasks and a $17-a-month annual option.

Quick verdict: which one fits you

If you…PickWhy
Your company runs on Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Meet)Gemini, already in your Workspace planEvery Business plan includes Gemini in Gmail and the Gemini app1, from $7 per user per month on an annual plan2. Team includes Claude for Microsoft 365 and Claude for Microsoft Outlook5, plus connectors for Microsoft 365, Slack, Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar and GitHub4. Google's option for non-Google shops is Gemini Enterprise Business, from $21 per seat, which connects to Microsoft 365, HubSpot, Notion and more6.
You want one assistant for everyday lifeGoogle AI Pro if you live in Google's apps; Claude Pro if you want tasks doneGoogle AI Pro is $19.99/month and includes 5 TB of storage you can share with up to five others7. You write or research a lotEither: pick by where your writing livesGoogle AI Pro has a 1 million token context window, expanded Deep Research and Gemini in Docs7. Claude Pro includes Research, and Claude lists a context window of up to 1M depending on the model5. Claude can also edit your Google Docs, Sheets and Slides live beside the chat (beta)3.

This isn't quite apples to apples. A Google Workspace seat is your business email, storage, video calls and documents, with Gemini included. A Claude Team seat is the AI only, so you keep whatever email you already use.

What each can actually do as an agent

Both now do more than answer questions. Here's what each can do for you today, from their own help pages. One naming note: Anthropic has merged its task agent, Claude Cowork, into regular Claude chats, rolling out first on Pro and Max. You just describe the job in any conversation8.

Where Claude pulls ahead

Handing off whole jobs. Describe the outcome you want and Claude works through the steps, from searching the web to reading your files to putting together a document, spreadsheet or deck8. Bigger tasks keep running after you close your laptop, and you can check in and redirect from your phone8. Scheduled tasks, like a weekly report from your Drive files, are on every paid plan, including Team9. And it isn't tied to one ecosystem: it works with Gmail and Google Calendar in detail3, plus Microsoft 365, Outlook and Slack54. By default Claude asks before it takes actions, and you can switch a conversation to Auto, where automated safety checks run before each action8.

Where Gemini pulls ahead

It's already inside Gmail, Docs and Drive, so there's nothing to connect for a Google company1. Gemini in Gmail can clean up your inbox in bulk, with a confirm step and 60 seconds to undo11. Google's plans also bundle storage, and Pro adds YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium7. The catch: many of Google's most hands-off features depend on where you live. Chrome auto browse is US and India only, Tasks in Gemini is in select countries, and Gemini Agent is US and English only7.

Privacy: is it training on your chats?

Personal plans

  • Claude: the pricing page lists model training as "Opt-out" on Free, Pro and Max5. Anthropic uses your chats to improve its models if you allow it in your privacy settings, and may also use chats flagged for a safety review16. The switch is in Settings → Privacy13. If you allow it, de-identified data can be kept up to 5 years; chats you delete are gone from Anthropic's systems within 30 days17. Incognito chats are never used for training16.
  • Gemini: with Keep Activity on, Google uses your activity to improve its services, including training its AI, with help from human reviewers. Reviewed chats are kept up to 3 years, even if you delete your activity14. Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default14. With Keep Activity off, future chats aren't used for training unless you send feedback, and are kept for 72 hours14.
  • Connected apps: Anthropic says it doesn't train on your Gmail, Drive or Calendar connector data3. With Gemini, the Google Workspace connection only works with Keep Activity on1214, so using Gemini with your inbox means leaving that setting on.
  • Ads: Google says your Gemini chats aren't used to show you ads14. We didn't find an ads statement on the Claude pages we checked: unknown.

Business plans

  • Claude Team: no model training by default on Team and Enterprise5. Custom data retention controls are Enterprise only5.
  • Gemini with Workspace: your content isn't reviewed by humans or used to train AI models outside your domain without permission18. Licensed users' Gemini app chats aren't used for training and are never reviewed by humans19. Admins set Gemini app retention up to 36 months; the default is 1818.

One habit for both: connect only the apps a task needs, and watch the agent when it acts. Google warns Gemini can make mistakes like buying things or sharing your data unexpectedly, so supervise its browsing14. Anthropic advises against giving computer use access to banking, healthcare or government apps15.

Security and admin for business tiers

  • Certifications: Anthropic lists SOC 2 Type I and II, ISO 27001:2022 and ISO/IEC 42001:2023 for its commercial products, plus a HIPAA-ready setup with a BAA available20. Google lists SOC 1/2/3, ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 27001, 27701, 27017, 27018 and 42001 for Gemini, plus FedRAMP High authorization18. Gemini in Chrome and Gemini Notebook aren't covered by those certifications yet18.
  • Sign-in and admin: Claude Team has SSO, domain verification, central billing, usage analytics and per-person spend limits; role-based access, SCIM, audit logs and the Compliance API need Enterprise5. Anthropic's Team help page lists domain capture and role-based permissions for Team4, but the pricing table marks them Enterprise only5, so confirm before you buy. On supported Workspace editions, admins can turn Gemini on or off per app (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Meet, Chat), and Gemini audit logs are available18.
  • Connector control: on Claude Team, an owner must switch on the Google connectors before anyone can use them3, and admins control remote and local connectors5. In Workspace, admins decide whether people can connect Workspace to the Gemini app18.
  • Data protection: on supported Workspace editions, your data loss prevention rules apply to Gemini output, and file restrictions can keep Gemini away from sensitive documents18. Gemini can't act on email and files encrypted with your own keys19.
  • Healthcare: Gemini with Workspace can support HIPAA workloads19. Claude's HIPAA-ready offering is on Enterprise, not Team5.
  • Prompt injection (hidden instructions in an email or web page): Gemini checks content for threats before acting and blocks or excludes it18. Claude scans for signs of prompt injection when it uses your computer15.
