The best AI agent for research (2026)

Deep dives, big batches and always-on monitoring need different tools. Here's which agent fits each job, what it costs, and how to check its work.

Short answer. For one-off deep dives, the $20-a-month tier of ChatGPT (deep research, plus ChatGPT Work for finished reports) or Google AI Pro (Deep Research) is enough for most people123. For big batches, such as researching 50 companies at once, Manus's Wide Research is built for volume4. For research that never stops, use scheduled monitoring tasks in ChatGPT or Hermes's scheduled briefings25. Whatever you use, open the sources before you rely on the answer.

Three kinds of research job

  • Deep dive: "Explain the market for X, with sources." One question, a long report.
  • Batch: "Do the same research on these 40 suppliers." Many similar small jobs.
  • Watch: "Tell me when a competitor changes pricing." Recurring checks that stay quiet unless something changes.

Most tools are good at one of these. Pick by the job you do most.

Picks by job

Deep dives: ChatGPT or Gemini at $20

Both include a deep-research mode in their roughly $20 tier13. ChatGPT's advantage is what comes after: ChatGPT Work can turn findings into a document, spreadsheet, presentation or Site2, and it can pull in files from Google Drive, Box, Dropbox and SharePoint2. Gemini's advantage is Google: if you already pay for Google AI Pro, try it first.

Batches: Manus

Manus's Pro plan includes Wide Research for large jobs and up to 20 concurrent tasks4. That's the shape of "research every company on this list". Manus is credit-based (4,000 credits for $20), and how many credits a batch uses is unknown until you try it4.

Watching: scheduled tasks or a self-hosted agent

ChatGPT's monitoring tasks check the web and your connected apps and only notify you when there's something worth reporting2. Hermes Agent can run scheduled briefings unattended if you want it on your own server5. Grok Bot runs bots on their own cloud computer 24/7, which also suits ongoing monitoring jobs10.

Reading in your browser: Comet

If most of your research is reading web pages, Perplexity's Comet browser summarizes across tabs as you go7. On Enterprise, admins can limit it to answers only, or allow actions only on approved domains11.

How to trust what comes back

  • Click the sources. Research agents cite links; ChatGPT's agent outputs included them12. Open the three claims that matter most and check that the source says what the summary says.
  • Watch for poisoned pages. Web pages can carry hidden instructions. OpenAI warns this "prompt injection" can push an agent into unintended actions12. ChatGPT's Lockdown Mode switches off deep research and live browsing to reduce data exfiltration when you're working with sensitive material2.
  • Prefer primary sources. Ask the agent to cite official pages, filings and papers rather than blogs or aggregators.
  • Date-stamp it. Ask for the date each source was published. Prices and policies change.
  • Keep confidential material in business plans. ChatGPT Business doesn't train on workspace data13; Perplexity says enterprise data is never used for training11.

A prompt that works

Agents do better with a clear brief. Try:

"Research [topic] for [who it's for]. I need: (1) a one-paragraph answer, (2) the five facts that matter most, each with a link to a primary source and its date, (3) what's disputed or unknown. Prefer official sources. Say 'unknown' rather than guessing."

That last line matters: it gives the agent permission not to fill gaps with plausible guesses. It's the rule we use on this site.

What it costs

For most people, $20 a month covers occasional deep research on ChatGPT Plus or Gemini through Google AI Pro23. Heavy researchers move up to ChatGPT Pro ($100–200) or Gemini Ultra (from $99.99)23. See How much does an AI agent cost? and /pricing for every plan.
