Best free AI agents and assistants (2026)

What you actually get for $0 from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Copilot, Muse and the open-source agents, what you have to pay for, and what happens to your chats. Plain English, every fact linked to the vendor's own page.

The longer answer. For most people the best free AI assistant is ChatGPT Free: text chats are unlimited within fair-use rules1. Ads may appear on the free plan, though23. If you use Google's apps, the free Gemini app gives you Deep Research and Gemini Live for $04. Claude Free can create files and connect to your apps6. Free plans answer questions well. Agents that do tasks for you while you're away mostly need a paid plan. The cheapest real step up is Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month5; ChatGPT Go launched at $8 in the US2.

Quick verdict: the best free pick for you

If you…PickWhy
You want one free assistant for everyday questionsChatGPT FreeText chats are unlimited on the free plan, within OpenAI's fair-use rules1. Uploads, image creation, voice and deep research are limited1. Expect ads: OpenAI said in January it would test ads on Free and Go, and Plus, Pro and Business don't get them23.
You live in Gmail, Google Drive and an Android phoneGemini (free)The free Gemini app includes Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems and image editing, plus the 15 GB of storage every Google account gets4. The cheapest upgrade in this guide is Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month5.
You write, plan or work with documentsClaude FreeFree Claude can search the web, create files, run code, remember across chats and connect to your apps6. It also includes Claude Slides and Docs and up to 5 projects6.
Your work is in Word, Excel and OutlookMicrosoft Copilot (free), then Microsoft 365 PersonalCopilot is free on the web, Windows, Mac and phones, with a limited allowance78. Copilot inside the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook desktop apps starts with Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month8.
You want an agent that does errands, not just answersMuse from Meta (where available)Muse is Meta's personal agent that takes actions for you, and it has a free tier with a usage limit that refreshes9. It's in limited testing and not available everywhere yet9. It asks before important actions like sending an email or buying something10.
You're handy with tech and want control of your dataOpenClaw or Hermes Agent (free software)Both are open source with no subscription for the software itself1112. You still pay for the AI model unless you pick a free one: Hermes's Nous Portal has a $0 tier with free models only12.
You run a companyA business plan, not a free tierFree plans are built for individuals1. OpenAI doesn't train on ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspaces by default13, and Claude Team doesn't either6. See the best AI agent for small business.

What each one gives you for free

Free plan includesThe catch
ChatGPTUnlimited text chats; limited uploads, images, voice, deep research and memory; limited ChatGPT Work in the desktop app; a built-in browser, projects and plugins1Response times are "limited on bandwidth & availability", and the free context window is the smallest (27K vs 54K on Go and Plus)1. May show ads23
ClaudeChat on web, desktop and mobile; web search; file creation and code; memory; connectors to your apps; Slides and Docs; voice mode; up to 5 projects6Usage resets in rolling five-hour windows, with no fixed message count. Free is meant for everyday questions; Pro gives at least 5x more per session6
GeminiGemini app with a Flash-Lite model, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems; Gemini Notebook; 15 GB of storage4Gemini app limits are based on how complex your requests are and refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly cap; Google AI Pro gets 4x the free usage4
GrokThe X Subscription's Free plan includes limited chat requests and limited agent requests, plus standard X14"Limited" is all the pricing page says14. Grok Bot, xAI's agent, isn't on Free or Plus15
Microsoft CopilotFree at copilot.cloud.microsoft, in the apps and in Edge: chat, writing help, live web answers, image creation and page summaries in Edge. Signing in adds chat history, longer chats and voice7A limited allowance that depends on available capacity. When you hit it, you upgrade or come back later8
Muse from MetaA personal agent that takes actions and connects to other apps, with a free tier9Free usage is capped and refreshes; limited testing, not in every country9
OpenClawFree, MIT-licensed software with no subscription, no hosted tier and no paid version. Runs on your Mac, Windows or Linux machine and chats over WhatsApp, Telegram and other apps11You bring the model: a hosted one, one backed by a subscription you already have, or a local one11
Hermes AgentFree, MIT-licensed software with memory, scheduling, web browsing and messaging apps like Telegram, WhatsApp and Slack12Model providers charge separately. Nous Portal's free tier is free models only, at standard rate limits12

We couldn't load Perplexity's pricing and help pages today (they block automated checks), so it's left out rather than guessed. Same for Grok's free-plan privacy defaults: unknown.

What's locked behind paid plans

Here's the pattern: free plans answer questions, write, search and make images. The agent features, like handing off a whole task, running it on a schedule or working inside your email and documents, mostly start at the first paid tier.

Needs a paid plan
ChatGPTScheduled tasks start on Go1. ChatGPT Work on web and mobile, advanced reasoning models and interactive charts need Plus1. Dots, the always-on agent, is Pro only1
ClaudeHanding off and scheduling tasks, Research, Claude in Chrome, Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook, the Opus models and more than 5 projects all start at Pro6
GeminiGemini in Gmail starts at Google AI Plus; Gemini in Docs and Sheets, Tasks in Gemini and Chrome auto browse need Google AI Pro, and the last two only in some countries5. Gemini Agent is Ultra, US and English only5
GrokGrok Bot needs Premium ($30 a month) or higher1514
Microsoft CopilotCopilot in the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook desktop apps needs Microsoft 365 Personal or higher8. Researcher, Analyst and the Cowork agent need Premium ($19.99 a month) or Pro, and Cowork is in preview in the US and Canada16178
MuseMore weekly usage: Power and Maximum plans9

Two free exceptions: ChatGPT Free includes limited use of ChatGPT Work in the desktop app1, and Muse's free tier is an agent that takes actions, within a usage cap9.

Usage limits: how much "free" really is

  • ChatGPT: text chats are unlimited, as long as your use is reasonable and follows OpenAI's policies. Uploads, images, voice, deep research and memory are capped1. OpenAI doesn't publish the exact numbers on its pricing page1.
  • Claude: limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, and how far they go depends on how long and complex your chats are6. Settings → Usage shows where you stand6.
  • Gemini: limits refresh every 5 hours until you hit a weekly cap, and you can buy AI credits to keep going4.
  • Grok: the Free plan has "limited" chat and agent requests14. Paid plans share one weekly pool across Grok, Grok Bot and Cursor15.
  • Copilot: the free version is limited and depends on available capacity8.
  • Muse: a free usage limit that refreshes. Paid plans add a weekly token allowance9.

Privacy on free plans: is it training on your chats?

  • ChatGPT: OpenAI may use your conversations to improve its models, and you can opt out anytime18: turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Settings → Data controls13. Temporary chats aren't used for training and may be kept up to 30 days for safety13. Ads are a separate setting13.
  • Claude: the pricing page lists training as "Opt-out" on Free6. Anthropic uses your chats to improve Claude if you allow it in your privacy settings, or if a chat is flagged for a safety review19. Incognito chats are never used, and raw connector data (like Google Drive) isn't either19.
  • Gemini: with Keep Activity on, Google uses your activity to improve its services, including training AI, and human reviewers see some chats. Reviewed chats are kept up to 3 years20. With it off, future chats aren't used for training unless you send feedback, and are kept for 72 hours20. The catch: connecting Gmail and Drive needs Keep Activity on20. Google says your Gemini chats aren't used to show you ads20.
  • Microsoft Copilot: in the current Copilot app (since 18 August 2026), your prompts, responses and files aren't used to train foundation models21. Without a Microsoft 365 subscription you may see ads, and you can switch off ad personalization in Settings → Personalization22.
  • Muse: training is on when you first use it. Switch it off in Settings → Data controls; the change also covers past chats10. Muse doesn't share your chats with Meta's ad systems10.
  • Grok: Grok Bot offers a training opt-out23. The default for free Grok chat: unknown.
  • OpenClaw: it runs on your own computer and keeps its data there. By default an install only sends the project a daily version check, which you can turn off11. Your chats still go to whichever model provider you connect.

The free-plan rule of thumb: don't paste anything you wouldn't want a reviewer to read. Google says this outright for Gemini20. For business data, use a business plan where training is off by default136.

"Free" open-source agents: the honest cost

OpenClaw and Hermes Agent are free to download, with no subscription for the software1112. You talk to them through chat apps you already use, like WhatsApp or Telegram, and Hermes can run scheduled jobs unattended1112. What you actually pay for:

  • The AI model. OpenClaw works with hosted, subscription-backed, gateway or local models11. Hermes says model providers and optional hosted services have their own pricing12. Nous Portal's free tier gives you free models only; paid tiers start at $20 a month with $22 of credits12. API usage is billed separately from consumer plans like ChatGPT Plus18, so a busy agent can cost more than a $20 subscription.
  • A computer that stays on. OpenClaw runs on your own Mac, Windows or Linux machine11. Hermes's tasks don't run while the agent is stopped; cloud hosting is optional12.
  • Your time and your security. You set it up and keep it updated. Read Is OpenClaw safe? before you connect your email, and see OpenClaw vs Hermes Agent to compare them.

When it's worth upgrading, and the cheapest step up

Upgrade when you keep hitting the limit, when you want the assistant to do tasks rather than answer, or when you want ads gone. Here's the cheapest paid step for each:

Cheapest paid planWhat it adds
ChatGPTGo: $8 a month in the US at launch in January 2026, with local prices elsewhere2. Today's pricing page shows no price, so check yours. Plus: $20 a month, monthly billing only18Go: more messages, uploads, images and memory, plus scheduled tasks1; ads may still appear12. Plus is ad-free3
ClaudePro: $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200 up front)6At least 5x Free's usage per session, plus task hand-off and scheduling6
GeminiGoogle AI Plus: $4.99 a month52x the usage of non-subscribers, Gemini in Gmail and 400 GB of storage you can share with up to five others5
GrokPlus: $8 a month, or $80 a year14Grok chat, voice, Imagine and Build, but no Grok Bot. Grok Bot starts on Premium at $301415
Microsoft CopilotMicrosoft 365 Personal: $9.99 a month8 or $99.99 a year17Copilot in the Office desktop apps, more Copilot usage than free, and 1 TB of storage8
MusePower: $20 a month9500M Muse tokens a week9
Hermes AgentNous Portal Plus: $20 a month12$22 of monthly model and tool credits and 200+ models12

Prices are US list prices as shown on 21 Oct 2026, before tax. ChatGPT's pricing page didn't show prices when we checked, so the Go price is the launch price from OpenAI's January 2026 announcement2. Microsoft 365 Premium, which adds Copilot's Researcher, Analyst and Cowork agents, is $19.99 a month816. Full price lists are on our pricing tracker and in how much does an AI agent cost.

Our take by type of person

  • Founders and business owners: free tiers are fine for testing ideas and personal research, not for customer or company data. When it becomes part of your work, budget for business seats, where training is off by default136.
  • Everyday users: start with ChatGPT Free or the Gemini app. If you hit limits weekly, Google AI Plus at $4.995 is the cheapest real upgrade we found today.
  • Microsoft households: free Copilot for chat; Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month if you want it inside Word and Outlook8.
  • People who want errands done: try Muse's free tier if it's available where you live9. Otherwise, agents that run tasks on their own, like ChatGPT dots, Claude's hand-off tasks or Grok Bot, are paid features1615.
  • Tinkerers: OpenClaw or Hermes with a model you already pay for or a free one, on a spare computer1112.
