Short answer. If you want an AI that answers customers for you, start with a support platform's own agent: Intercom's Fin charges $0.99 per resolved outcome and also works on top of other helpdesks1; Salesforce shops can use Agentforce, from $2 per conversation2. If you want AI that helps your human team reply faster, a copilot or a general agent (ChatGPT's Zendesk plugin, Grok Bot) is cheaper and lower-risk34.
Two different jobs
"AI for customer support" means one of two things, and they're priced and risked differently:
- Customer-facing agents talk to your customers directly in chat, email or phone, answer from your help center, take simple actions and hand off to a person when stuck. Intercom says Fin answers email, live chat, phone and more, takes actions on external systems, and hands off to agents in your preferred inbox1.
- Agent-assist tools sit beside your support team: they summarize tickets, find the right article and draft a reply a human sends. Intercom Copilot1, the ChatGPT Zendesk plugin3 and general agents like Grok Bot4 fall here.
The best evidence so far is for the second kind. A study of 5,179 customer support agents found that access to an AI assistant raised issues resolved per hour by 14% on average and 34% for novice and lower-skilled workers, with minimal impact on the most experienced, and improved customer sentiment and retention5.
The options, with prices
| Option | Type | Price | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom Fin AI Agent | Customer-facing | $0.99 per outcome1 | Works with your current helpdesk (Salesforce and others) with no seats, but a minimum monthly commitment applies (e.g. 50 outcomes)1 |
| Intercom helpdesk + Fin | Platform | $29, $85 or $132 per seat/mo billed annually, plus Fin outcomes1 | SSO and HIPAA support on Expert; 14-day free trial1 |
| Intercom Copilot | Agent-assist | $29/agent/mo annual, $35 monthly1 | 10 free Copilot conversations per agent each month1 |
| Salesforce Agentforce | Customer-facing and employee | $2 per conversation, or Flex Credits at $500 per 100,000; $125/user/mo add-ons2 | An action costs 20 credits ($0.10); voice actions 30; you can't mix Flex Credits and Conversations in one org2 |
| ChatGPT + Zendesk plugin | Agent-assist | Included in your ChatGPT plan (beta)3 | Reviews tickets and customer history, finds knowledge, prepares replies; each member connects their own Zendesk account3 |
| Grok Bot | Agent-assist / back office | $30/seat/mo (Premium)6 | Works inside any app you log it into, including Zendesk, on its own cloud computer4 |

What it costs at your volume
Take 1,000 conversations a month the AI handles end to end. On Fin that's about $990 a month if every one counts as an outcome1. On Agentforce's per-conversation pricing it's $2,0002. The units differ: Fin charges only when the customer confirms it's resolved, doesn't ask for more help, or a workflow completes1, while Agentforce Conversations bill per conversation. Salesforce's own example puts 20 "where is my order?" requests a day at about $120 a month on Flex Credits2.
Compare that with what a resolved ticket costs you today in staff time. If the AI's price per resolution is well below it and customers aren't complaining, it's paying for itself. More on this in Are AI agents worth it for business?
Which should you pick?
You already use Intercom, or a helpdesk without good AI
Fin is the simplest test: it runs on Intercom or on top of other helpdesks, you pay per outcome, and the startup programme offers up to 93% off1.
You're on Salesforce Service Cloud
Agentforce keeps the agent inside your CRM data. Start with the free Foundations tier to build, then choose Flex Credits or Conversations2.
You're a small team and want help, not a bot
Give your team an assistant first. ChatGPT Business or Claude Team cost $20–25 a seat78, and ChatGPT's Zendesk plugin drafts replies from ticket history3. That's the pattern the productivity research measured5.
Safety: customers will test it
- Anyone can type anything. A customer-facing agent reads untrusted text all day. OpenAI warns that agents can be tricked by malicious content into unintended actions (prompt injection) and that safeguards "don't eliminate all risks"9. Give it read-only access to orders, not refunds, until you've watched it work.
- Always offer a human. Pick a tool that hands off cleanly; Fin hands off to your team's inbox1.
- Start with your help center. Answers are only as good as your articles. Fix the top 20 first.
- Watch costs weekly. Usage pricing has no natural cap; Salesforce provides usage alerts in Digital Wallet2.
- Regulated data? Intercom lists HIPAA support only on its Expert plan1.
A two-week pilot
- Pick your 10 most common questions and make sure each has an accurate help article.
- Turn the AI on for one channel (usually chat) during staffed hours only.
- Read every AI conversation for the first week. Note wrong answers and fix the source article.
- Compare resolution rate, customer rating and cost per resolution with the month before.
- Expand only if all three hold up.

FAQ
Questions people ask
What is the best AI agent for customer support?
For customer-facing automation, a helpdesk's own agent: Intercom Fin ($0.99 per outcome, works with other helpdesks)1 or Salesforce Agentforce for Salesforce users2. For helping your human team, an assistant like Intercom Copilot or ChatGPT with the Zendesk plugin13.
How much does an AI customer support agent cost?
Usually per resolution or per conversation: Fin is $0.99 per outcome1; Agentforce is $2 per conversation, or $0.10 per action on Flex Credits2.
Do AI agents actually improve customer support?
A study of 5,179 support agents found AI assistance raised issues resolved per hour by 14% on average and 34% for novices, and improved customer sentiment5. That was an assistant for human agents, not a fully autonomous bot.
Can an AI agent replace my support team?
Not fully. Customer-facing agents handle routine questions and hand off the rest; Fin, for example, hands off to your team's inbox1. The research benefit came from helping people, not replacing them5.
Is it safe to let an AI answer customers?
With limits. Agents can be manipulated by malicious input (prompt injection)9. Keep actions read-only at first, always offer a human, and review conversations weekly.
