The longer answer. If your business already pays for Google Workspace, start with the Gemini you already have: it's built into every Business plan from $7 a user12. If you're on Microsoft 365 or want an agent that hands back finished files, ChatGPT Business at $20–25 a seat is the stronger pick34. For personal use they cost about the same, $20 vs $19.99 a month67: pick ChatGPT for bookings and errands on websites, Gemini if you live in Gmail and want 5 TB of storage thrown in.
Quick verdict: which one fits you
| If you… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your company runs on Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Meet) | Gemini, already in your Workspace plan | Gemini in Gmail and the Gemini app come with every Business plan, from $7 per user per month on an annual plan12. Business Standard ($14) adds Gemini in Docs, Meet and more12. Add ChatGPT Business later only if you want its agent to build finished files for you. |
| Your company runs on Microsoft 365, or a mix of tools | ChatGPT Business | $20 per seat per month on annual billing, $25 monthly, from 2 seats3. Works with Outlook email and calendar, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and SharePoint files4. Google's answer for non-Google shops is Gemini Enterprise Business, from $21 per seat5. |
| You want one personal assistant for everyday life | ChatGPT Plus or Google AI Pro (about $20 either way) | ChatGPT Plus is $20/month6 and can book restaurant tables and finish tasks on websites you sign in to, asking before a reservation or payment4. Google AI Pro is $19.99/month and includes 5 TB of storage7. If you already pay Google for storage, Pro is the better deal. |
| You read and research a lot | Google AI Pro for huge documents; ChatGPT Plus for finished reports | Google AI Pro gives you a 1 million token context window and expanded Deep Research7. ChatGPT Plus has expanded deep research and a 256K reasoning context8, and ChatGPT Work turns research into documents, spreadsheets, slides and Sites4. |
| You want an agent that keeps working while you're away | ChatGPT Pro (dots) or Google AI Ultra | A ChatGPT dot is an always-on agent with its own cloud computer, included with Pro ($100/month and up) and Business Premium94. Gemini Agent is on Ultra ($99.99/month and up), US and English only7. |
Price at a glance: personal plans

Price at a glance: business plans
This isn't quite apples to apples. A Google Workspace seat is your business email, storage, video calls and documents, with Gemini included. A ChatGPT Business seat is the AI only, so you keep whatever email you already use.
| ChatGPT Business | Gemini with Google Workspace | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry seat | ChatGPT Business Standard: $20/user/month annual, $25 monthly; minimum 2 seats3 | Workspace Business Starter: $7/user/month annual, $8.40 flexible2. Includes Gemini in Gmail and the Gemini app1 |
| Mid tier | No middle tier listed; you mix Standard and Premium seats3 | Business Standard: $14 annual, $16.80 flexible2. Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Meet and more1 |
| Power seat | Business Premium: $100/user/month annual, $125 monthly; 5x Standard usage and dots312 | Business Plus: $22 annual, $26.40 flexible, adds Vault and advanced endpoint management213 |
| AI without switching email | Not needed: ChatGPT Business works alongside any email system | Gemini Enterprise Business edition: from $21/seat/month, connects to Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, HubSpot, Slack and more5 |
| Team size cap | Minimum 2 seats3; maximum unknown | Business plans: up to 300 users; Enterprise has no limit1 |
Annual Workspace plans lock in your seat count until renewal; flexible plans let you add and remove people any month2. ChatGPT Business lets you buy workspace credits for usage past the included limits, and API usage is billed separately3. Enterprise pricing for both is through sales.
What each can actually do as an agent
Both have moved past "chatbot". Here's what each one can do for you today, from their own help pages. One housekeeping note: ChatGPT's old "agent mode" is gone. OpenAI now points you to ChatGPT Work for multi-step tasks18, and dots for always-on work9.
| ChatGPT | Gemini | |
|---|---|---|
| Drafts and sends from Gmail or Outlook: it writes the draft and you choose to send (web; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise)4 | Gemini in Gmail drafts, summarizes, searches and organizes (archive, delete, label) only after you confirm14. Needs a Workspace or Google AI plan14 | |
| Calendar | Google Calendar, plus Outlook calendars; connect personal and work Google accounts in one chat4 | Create, find and edit events, including shared calendars15; from Gmail it can find open slots and reschedule14 |
| Office documents | ChatGPT for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Sheets4 | Gemini in Docs and Sheets on Google AI Pro7; in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive and Meet on Workspace plans1 |
| Longer tasks | ChatGPT Work researches, works across apps and creates documents, spreadsheets, presentations and Sites, asking you to approve important actions4. Full access on Plus and up; limited on Free and Go8 | Tasks in Gemini plans the steps, browses sites and keeps working in the background (Pro and Ultra, select countries)7, using a remote browser and computer16 |
| Browsing for you | Work can sign in to websites with you, e.g. to book a DMV appointment; it asks before a reservation or payment (Plus and Pro)4 | Chrome auto browse on Pro and Ultra, US and India only7 |
| Always-on agent | Dots: own cloud computer, keep working between chats; Pro (not in the EEA, Switzerland or UK) and Business Premium9 | Gemini Agent: Ultra only, US and English only7 |
| Phone calls | A dot can't call you at launch9 | AI calls to local businesses on Ultra (US only)7 |
| Connectors | Plugins on every plan8: Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Outlook, Box, Dropbox, SharePoint and more4 | Gmail, Docs, Drive, Calendar, Tasks and Keep through the Google Workspace app17; custom third-party MCP connectors16 |
Where ChatGPT pulls ahead
Finished work. ChatGPT Work goes from a goal to a document, spreadsheet, deck or website4, and on the desktop app it can use your local files and apps with your permission4. It's also the better fit for Microsoft shops: Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint all work with it4. And dots, the always-on agents, are available to businesses on Premium seats today9.
Where Gemini pulls ahead
It's already inside Gmail, Docs and Drive, so there's nothing to connect for a Google company1. Gemini in Gmail can clean up your inbox in bulk, with a confirm step and 60 seconds to undo14. Google's plans also bundle storage, and Pro adds YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium7. The catch for Google's most agentic features: many are limited by country. Chrome auto browse is US and India only, and Gemini Agent is US and English only7.

Privacy: is it training on your chats?
Personal plans
- ChatGPT: OpenAI may use your conversations to improve its models, and you can opt out any time6. Turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Settings → Data controls. Temporary chats aren't used for training and may be kept up to 30 days for safety19.
- Gemini: with Keep Activity on, Google uses your activity to improve its services, including training its AI, and human reviewers read some chats. Reviewed chats are kept up to 3 years, even if you delete your activity16. Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default16.
- The Gemini trade-off: turning Keep Activity off stops training on future chats, but Google Workspace stops working as a connected app until you turn it back on16. To use Gemini with your Gmail and Calendar, Keep Activity has to be on17.
- Ads: ChatGPT Free and Go may show ads84. Google says Gemini chats aren't used to show you ads16.
Business plans
- ChatGPT Business: OpenAI won't train on your workspace's data3, including data from connected apps, by default20. Admins can view, export and delete members' conversations and set how long data is kept20.
- Gemini with Workspace: your content isn't reviewed by humans or used to train AI models outside your domain without permission21. Licensed users' Gemini app chats aren't used for training and are never reviewed by humans22. Admins set Gemini app retention up to 36 months21.
One habit for both: connect only the apps a task needs, and don't hand over passwords in the chat. OpenAI gives exactly this advice18, and Google warns that Gemini can make mistakes like buying things or sharing your data unexpectedly, so watch its browsing16.
Security and admin for business tiers
- Certifications: ChatGPT Business has completed a SOC 2 Type 2 audit20. Google lists SOC 1/2/3, ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 27001, 27701, 27017, 27018 and 42001 for Gemini, plus FedRAMP High authorization21. OpenAI's ISO certifications for Business weren't stated on the pages we checked: unknown.
- Sign-in and admin: ChatGPT Business has SSO and multi-factor authentication12, with SAML SSO for enterprise-level sign-in20. SCIM, role-based access and data residency need Enterprise12. On supported Workspace editions, admins can turn Gemini features on or off per app, and Gemini audit logs are available21.
- Data protection: on supported Workspace editions, existing data loss prevention rules apply to Gemini output, and file restrictions can keep Gemini away from sensitive documents21. Gemini can't act on email and files encrypted with your own keys22.
- Healthcare: Gemini with Workspace can support HIPAA workloads22. For OpenAI, a BAA needs a contracted plan, not self-serve Business3.
- Prompt injection: Gemini checks content for threats before acting and blocks or excludes it21. ChatGPT offers Lockdown Mode, which limits web access to reduce data leaks from prompt injection, and admins can set it for members4.
Choose in five minutes
- Where's your work email? Google Workspace: try the Gemini you already pay for first. Outlook: ChatGPT.
- Do you want answers or finished files? Finished decks, spreadsheets and Sites: ChatGPT Work4.
- Are you buying for yourself? Both main plans cost about $2067. Already paying Google One? Google AI Pro replaces that bill with 5 TB included7.
- Where do you live? Dots on Pro skip the EEA, Switzerland and the UK9. Gemini Agent and Chrome auto browse are limited to the US (and India for auto browse)7.
- Still torn? Both have free plans810. Give each the same real task for a week, like "find every unpaid invoice in my email", and keep the one that gets it right.
